Wireless EMG System

WMD used proven EMG sensors and established wireless communications techniques in the development of the wEMG. Our product will be more portable, easier to use, and more accurate than the current available systems. By eliminating wires, wEMG can be quickly and easily setup in any environment. The lack of wires greatly reduces the restriction on the subject’s movement which, in turn, leads to more accurate diagnoses.

The WMD Solution

The EMG pads are placed on the subject’s body to measure muscle activity. Each pad sends information to a transmitter and ground electrode (TGE) module that is also placed on the subject. The TGE modules wirelessly transmit the EMG data to the WMD designed receiver station that receives the data and interfaces with a PC. A PC installed with appropriate software collects the data from the receiver and will display it to the screen in real-time and save the data for future use and analysis. Below is a list of specifications of WMD's proof-of-concept wireless EMG system.

  • 4 EMG Pads
  • 99.9% data receive rate @ 25m (Indoors)
  • 10-3 Bit Error Rate (BER) @ 25m (Indoors)
  • Battery Life ~ 6 Hours Continuous (Lithium)
  • Battery Life ~ 2.5 Hours Continuous (NiMH Rechargeable)
  • RSSI (Signal Strength Indicator)

Future wEMG Developments

WMD is currently looking into creating a wireless link to the receiver station directly from EMG pad so that no wires will be necessary. This is impossible with the available EMG sensor used in the proof-of-concept device, but the development of new EMG sensors that would not require a ground strap is on the horizon.

There is also the possibility of using WMD's wireless solution with other biological signals such as ECG or EEG. To adapt to other biological will be as simple as plugging in a different sensor to the TGE.
